Introducing the Outstate Supplies Initiative
On a mission to serve students in need at all eligible schools in the state, Kids in Need Minnesota launches a program to expand services to qualifying schools outside the Twin Cities Metro.
During the 2017-2018 school year, Kids in Need Minnesota distributed $1.5 million worth of product to nearly 98,000 students in need of suppliesat eligible schools through the free Teacher Resource Center, located in Roseville. Until last fall, however, shopping at the Resource Center was limited to teachers at schools in the 7-county metro area.
In the Fall of 2018, the Outstate Supplies Initiative (OSI) was launched to help serve more students in more of Minnesota. Minnesota schools where 70% or more of students participate in the federal free and reduced lunch program were invited to join the Outstate Supplies Initiative in the fall. Those that enrolled received boxes of school supplies right to their school, with one box for each teacher.
The semester of the launch, the Outstate Supplies Initiative served 20 schools in 14 Minnesota counties with over 220 boxes. That means supplies for more than 6,500 students who were previously unable to gain access to resources like our center in Roseville!
We were so excited to hear back from some of our first-ever outstate recipients. Here are some of the words of gratitude from teachers and administrators that made us smile:
“We received our supplies today! Our teachers are THRILLED!”
“Our kids were so excited and happy to get “their own.” Thank you!”
“It had a Christmas morning feel as we opened the boxes and saw all the many gifts…thanks for all you do for kids!”
Our goal is to connect with all 55 qualifying outstate schools that we are currently aware of, and we are making good progress! Spread the word about the work being done to connect Minnesota schools in need with basic materials through the Outstate Supplies Initiative. Financial support is vital too, as donations help us continue to serve teachers through our store in Roseville as well as send materials right to the doors of the outstate schools that need them most!
